“One of the most important actions, things a leader can do, is to lead by example. If you want everyone else to be passionate, committed, dedicated and motivated, you go first!”

Marshall Goldsmith

Mr. Sudhir Udayakanth, CEO of Ishara c2c and Edge Academy showed how. As the key speaker at the industry connect of the Institute of Product Leadership, he shared essentials of corporate etiquette and how to build executive presence.

Speaking at Whitefield campus on 4th May 2019, Sudhir stated that, “When starting a business, the first thing you need to do is to find a guy who has got money to invest.”

Sudhir Udayakanth is a highly skilled presenter, motivator, and coach. In addition to providing consultative and advisory services on business strategy and marketing.

He explained about the three kinds of people you need to meet while starting a business,

One, who started a business and failed miserably,

Two, somebody who’s started a business and is still struggling,

Third, who started a business and continues to do it.

“The first thing you’re supposed to do when you meet people is to shake hands. People meet and there’s a web and the webs collide.” he pointed out.

He went on to explain about the numerous kinds of handshake styles.

“In the corporate world there’s no gender, everybody is fighting for the same position, same designation and salary,” said Sudhir, talking about shaking hands with the ladies.

Key points to be noted in a corporate encounter:

  • Be the first person to say hello.
  • Corridor conversations do not require an answer.
  • Accept a person’s right to be individualistic.
  • Be a good listener.
  • Use words like ‘but’ cautiously
  • Sense of humor is key. Make sure it is self-deprecating.
  • Look for positives in the people you meet
  • Take the risk and do not anticipate rejection.
  • Start and end with a handshake and the person’s name.
  • Be natural

Three key points of focus:

Sudhir explained that personality is “what people get to see, above the ground. What you really are,” constitutes your attitude and what you truly believe in, your ethics and principles form the value system.

Style is a significant factor in one’s personality. “First thing that people notice, when it comes to style is shoes”, Sudhir said. Men have three kinds of shoes, while women have plenty.

He goes on explaining about various kinds of neckties and formal wear which are appropriate for formal gatherings.

Observing body language subtly, understanding them and behaving accordingly. Table manners and basic etiquette to be followed in formal dining set up.

After covering leadership building, Sudhir ended the session showcasing a number of books about body language and corporate etiquettes.
