With 18 years of experience encompassing roles as a developer, tech lead, program manager, and project manager, Sriramulu Appana had always been captivated by the world of product management. As an entrepreneur, he had already delved into aspects of product management such as competitive analysis, customer service, product roadmap, and strategy. However, he realized the need to enhance his skills in areas such as go-to-market strategies and financials to excel in the field.
Discovering the EMBA in Product Leadership:
During the pandemic, Sriramulu embarked on a search for product management courses in India and found that the Institute of Product Leadership (IPL) offered a unique classroom program dedicated to the subject. What truly stood out for him was the institute’s distinctive offerings, including product labs for experiential learning and career labs that provided opportunities to showcase skills to recruiting managers. Recognizing the value of these resources and the vast network of product managers associated with IPL, the individual made the decision to enroll in the EMBA in 2020.
The Power of Career Club and Talentathons:
One of the highlights of the EMBA program at IPL is the Career Club, which hosts talentathons where candidates can demonstrate their skills to hiring managers. Engaging in multiple case studies through the talentathons allowed the individual to deepen their product management knowledge and hone their skills. With each new case study, they gained confidence and successfully cracked several interviews as a result.
Advice for Aspiring Product Managers:
Drawing from his own experience,Sriramulu offers advice to aspiring product managers. He emphasizes the importance of being a lifelong learner and maintaining a balance between experimental and academic learning. Developing a product mindset is also crucial, regardless of one’s background in departments like IT, engineering, or other domains. Understanding customer expectations and needs is vital for finding innovative solutions and driving success in product management.
