Building a Career in Product Leadership at Visa

Chethan Srinivasa- Sr Director of Product Management at VISA

I am Chethan Srinivasa, Senior Director of Product Management at Visa, with a focus on billing products. For me, product management is largely about addressing issues that matter and making an impact in people’s lives. I wanted to share my own growth journey in product management, the role of learning and networking, and the things that have helped me get to a leadership position.

From the start, my view of the product management role was rooted in user needs and market problems.  My professional journey is both an evolution of my individual role in product management and my path towards leadership.  As I moved into senior roles, I began to expand my focus both in terms of how I think about product management and how I engage the thinking and actions of others to create impact.

My motivation has always been the same. I wanted to create products that benefit people and provide solutions to actual problems. That focus pushed me to grow, take on bigger responsibilities, and seek leadership opportunities.

    How I Grew Into Leadership?

    Learning That Mattered

Growth came from constant learning and practice. Classroom learning was useful, but applying frameworks and methods in real projects made the difference.

    Turning Knowledge Into Action

I believe in picking up unsolved problems no matter where you work, and applying product management principles to solve them. This not only gives you experience, but also demonstrates the value you provide.

    The Power of Connections

Networking played a big part in my journey. Interacting with peers, leaders, and faculty with diverse experiences gave me new perspectives. Internal networking was important, building relationships inside the organization and showing what I could deliver created opportunities for advancement.

    Challenges That Shaped Me

It was not an easy journey. I dealt with complex strategy challenges and challenging actions from stakeholders. Each one of those situations became an opportunity to grow my problem solving and leadership skills. The only wins I experienced came from seeing our product improve people’s experience, as well as seeing team members progress their own careers.

Today, I lead product management for billing at Visa. My role involves guiding strategy, managing complex portfolios, and supporting teams in delivering meaningful outcomes. It gives me the chance to turn my passion for problem-solving into impact at scale.

    Lessons for Aspiring Product Leaders

Here are some things I’ve discovered along the way:

    • Focus on problem-solving. Look for unsolved problems and apply your skills directly.
    • Build your network. Inside and outside the organization, connections open doors and provide guidance.
    • Show your value. Apply what you learn and demonstrate outcomes.
    • Learn from diverse voices. Seek out mentors and practitioners with different backgrounds.

According to LinkedIn, product management roles have grown by nearly 29 percent year over year, with thousands of new opportunities opening each week, making it one of the fastest-growing career paths.

Growth Through Learning, Practice, and People

My journey to Senior Director has demonstrated that product management is all about continuous growth. Learning, applying and building connections is what really matters. If you want to be successful in this field, concentrate on solving problems and developing great relationships. Those are the assets that will carry you forward.
